Depression Update: Crocs to disappear forever

April 23, 2009 by

Well according to this article, Crocs will not live out the year. This means you’ll have to look at fewer people walking around in brightly colored plastic shoes, and only backs up Jeffrey Tucker’s theory that Depressions produce better style (among men at least).

But interestingly, the article also notes 11 other major brands that will die before year’s end. The Chrysler and Saturn line of cars will be gone as will at least one more major Airline.

But Tucker actually made these brands fail:
The GAP brands (such as Banana Republic) will be gone soon, as will Eddie Bauer.

Could it be that everyone is now buying wool slacks instead of khakis?

Crocs was going down the tubes for a few years noe. Their stock was as inflated as their egos when, for a while, they thought they were God’s gift to footware. I’ll be glad to see them go.

No surprise there: the only place I’ve seen crocs lately is at traffic lights – on the feet of beggars ( I think you call them panhandlers over there…..).

Not Hip—but enjoy my crocks that are toe closed and many never realize they are crocks.

Strange. I have a link to the Library of Congress site with thousands of Farm Service Administration photographs taken during the last Great Depression. I see images of men in wrinkled cotton shirts and khakis (if not overhauls) and barefoot children. Not sure Tucker’s theory holds in every locale.

Apart from the Crox part, this blog is prone to gross black and white characterizations and ‘lists’ that predict a variety of absolutes like “cease to exist” – great sensationalism, not all that reliable.

Crocs disappearing is certainly no loss. These tasteless plastic wraps are a perfect example of the cheap throw away garbage (mostly from China) that has increasingly filled retail stores in the US over the last 10 years. May this kind of crap all disappear.
