Congress Could End the Organ Shortage Now

June 13, 2007 by

There are things you can do to help mitigate the shortage of transplantable organs such as kidneys. For example, you can identify yourself as an organ donor on your drivers license. You can join LifeSharers. And if you’re really generous, you can give your organs away.

But Congress could end the shortage of transplantable organs entirely right now by repealing the ban on organ sales. Until it does, it will have the blood on its hands of the 6,000 people who die each year on the transplant waiting list.

Read my full op-ed on the organ shortage and our murderous Congress in today’s Columbus Dispatch.

I’m a member of LifeSharers, too.

The whole organ scam hits close to home, so to speak, because my own father is about eleven years removed from a kidney transplant. He was lucky, as he had ten brothers and sisters, of which (only, but thankfully) one was a healthy match. Dialysis is a horrible (and very short) way to live.

As mentioned, his chances of receiving a transplant were very slim if he hadn’t received a kidney from his immediate family. Virtually no one in my generation of our family would be as lucky, which is the same sad boat most people are in. It is simply treacherous to think that things could be even a little bit better, but the God-foresaken public health regime and Congress uses us all as pawns in their own little ideological make-believe world.
