		<description><![CDATA[I think a lot of this is pretty simple. The govt vis-a-vis private industries simply want more job applicants but then simultaneously, the academic labs want more grad students and postdocs. That&#039;s the alpha and the omega of the lies about shortages and subsequent oversupplies of scientists and engineers.

Now, here&#039;s where there&#039;s no problem... what&#039;s the definition of medical school? It&#039;s an advanced masters degree in human physiology w/ clinicals. Yes, it&#039;s a graduate level science program but yet, there&#039;s no shortage of US citizen and green card holder applicants and there&#039;s no shortage of women applicants either. In other words, by guaranteeing high employability and a six figure income, one can always have a ready made pool of applicants w/o lying to the public. I&#039;d argue that it&#039;s easier to get into a single US medical school (I don&#039;t mean like Johns Hopkins but an average program, given 12-15 applications) then it is to find employment at a Google, straight out of college. And at the same time, a professional association, AMA, needs to certify each degree granting institute and thus, insures a supply side constraint.

All and all, most intelligent college students know the above so in general, the science and engineering USA applicants tend to be walking into their own graves, fully knowing (aside from the lies/pat on the back from advisors) that their career is that of a lowly postdoc w/o that &quot;Google offer letter&quot; from industry. Usually, it&#039;s a matter of pride/ego that a high IQ (but socially challenged) American doesn&#039;t opt for patent law, pharmacist, or MD pathologist a/o anesthesiologist knowing perfectly well that one can be a studious nerd but never find a job, outside of a licensed study-holic profession. And no anesthesiologist, I know of, earns less than $250K/yr even after malpractice insurance.

Let&#039;s see now... we have an argument against politicians saying they should not make decisions relevant to mathematicians since the politicians are &quot;probably the least well educated in technical fields.&quot; In that case, this same argument holds against the author and he should stop writing, unless of course he presumes to have training in both math &lt;i&gt;and&lt;/i&gt; political science. &lt;/p&gt;

In the last two paragraphs we have the old &lt;i&gt;slippery slope&lt;/i&gt; appeal to catch those who are still not persuaded. 		<description><![CDATA[I have removed my master&#039;s degree in math from my resume to get jobs.  I presently work in an office. If anybody asks what I did for the time I was in grad school, I will them them I attempted grad school, but couldn&#039;t pass the coursework.  I consider the masters in math to be job repellant.

I have taken additional courses in accounting(5 of them) and computer science in an effort to put myself in a better position to compete for jobs, but it doesn&#039;t seem to have much effect.

As Rothbard would be among the first to note, the high levels of corporatedom are among those especially prone to parasitize off the body politic. Many are mainly parasites, but the record is much more mixed when it comes to genuinely profoundly productive men like Gates or John D. Rockefeller.

Many are mainly parasites, but the record is much more mixed when it comes to genuinely profoundly productive men like Gates or John D. Rockefeller.</p>

If someone wants to learn something they got to pay for improving their value themselves. Education is a form of capital investment, and if I invest, I&#039;d like to have title to my investment.

The labour laws in US specifically prevent employers from claiming any interest in the skills a worker obtained as a part of his on-job training.  Any wonder nobody wants to train if he can hire someone already qualified?

Of course, when no one with the right qualifications is available I&#039;d look for someone who seems bright and capable of fast learning, but this is a rarity, as these guys quickly make themselves scarce and very expensive.

Nearly all of the &quot;old guard&quot; is in US and Israel, and the youngsters lack basic professional skills - and there are precious few left of those who can teach them. From Indian guys I&#039;ve heard they&#039;re facing the same problem in Bangalore. Majority of projects offshored there (and I&#039;ve seen quite a few of them) manage to produce useless crap at best.

Cannot say much about China, as I don&#039;t have any personal experience with R&amp;D there.

Numbers are largely irrelevant. What matters with high-tech workforce is quality - and that is why US leadership in this field is secure for as long as it remains a magnet for the top professionals. The Dept of Homeland Security seems to be hell-bent on turning US into a third-world country by making *legal* immigration as degrading, humiliating and unpleasant as possible, though. They are the single biggest collection of assholes in the world.

Quequeg - hiring 2% of applicants in high-tech is actually quite good; in my practice 80% of applicants are simply unable to perform any useful work in their stated profession and/or lying in their resume, 15% are mediocre (defined as order-of-magniture less productive than the best), and of the remaining 5% only 0.5-1% have the right experience and knowledge of specific technology needed for the project at hand.]]></description>

A year ago, Bill Gates was trying to get more people to go into computers, even though Microsoft only hires less than 2% of applicants. But still, a greater supply of applicants would be beneficial for companies, because then they can get an even finer cream which can be skimmed off, leaving the rest for the drain.

2) The constant story in the media about how dumb/lazy we are and how bad K-12 is, gives companies an excuse to hire H-1B and L-1 workers and to outsource jobs. The corporate/government spokespeople can say, &quot;well, we&#039;d like to hire Americans, but Americans are just lousy workers. So, we need to export jobs and import workers. Oh, and we need to set aside a little money for education too, so that one day Americans will be qualified for the jobs.&quot; The day after Bush gave his State-of-the-Union speech, he went to Minneapolis and gave another speech in which he talked about the need to lift all limits on H-1B visas.

		<description><![CDATA[Yes, I am wondering the same thing. I just got a &quot;worthless&quot; MST (Masters in Teaching) in Mathematics.  So far I have earned $9,000.00 in one year teaching 3 courses in beginning math at junior colleges.  Besides the fact is that I owe $60,000 to Uncle Sam in student loans.  I was kicked out of the certification program during student teaching.  The students lacked discipline and used physical force against me to push me out the door, a criminal act in Illinois, but this gave the school district an excuse to get rid of me instead.   Since I learned enough to teach at the college level, I believe that the President&#039;s propaganda is a &quot;make work&quot; project for education.  The strategy is to get rid of teacher candidates at the last possible moment rather than certify them so they can get jobs that pay a living wage.  I student taught for ten weeks simply for the convenience of the &quot;mentor teachers&quot; personal lives, since I worked for free and they got paid for the work I was doing.  I fall directly into the adjunct AP Math Teacher category the President was talking about implementing in the State of the Union Address.  However, just like the No Child Left Behind Act, this program will probably not be Federally funded and so it will be a failure at the local level. The last thing I would add is that the AP Math program is not feasible unless the student is highly talented and has taken the prerequisite coursework, normally four years of high school math, prior to taking the AP Math courses.  This means that the student would have to have started along this path in grade school or take more than one math course per year in order to take AP math (college level Calculus and/or Statistics).]]></description>

Since I learned enough to teach at the college level, I believe that the President&#8217;s propaganda is a &#8220;make work&#8221; project for education.  The strategy is to get rid of teacher candidates at the last possible moment rather than certify them so they can get jobs that pay a living wage.  I student taught for ten weeks simply for the convenience of the &#8220;mentor teachers&#8221; personal lives, since I worked for free and they got paid for the work I was doing.  I fall directly into the adjunct AP Math Teacher category the President was talking about implementing in the State of the Union Address.  However, just like the No Child Left Behind Act, this program will probably not be Federally funded and so it will be a failure at the local level. The last thing I would add is that the AP Math program is not feasible unless the student is highly talented and has taken the prerequisite coursework, normally four years of high school math, prior to taking the AP Math courses.  This means that the student would have to have started along this path in grade school or take more than one math course per year in order to take AP math (college level Calculus and/or Statistics).</p>

In which case the problem becomes spotting genius before it appears &amp; encouraging it. Apart from Robert Galloway&#039;s point about improving early maths teaching this seems to be something in which normal money economics, of either wing, breaks down because they are, by definition, dealing with large statistical populations.]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[Just a couple of anecdotes:
I was just entering the eighth grade when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. At the time, I thought I would like to enter medicine or engineering. Engineering won out since being a doctor required more years of college and I thought I could do well enough with just a BS in engineering. When it came time to choose a major, Chemical Engineering won out over Electrical Engineering because most of my EE friends were being interviewed by government defense contractors or the government directly, and I wanted to do something besides think of better ways to kill people. Generally, I was happy with my earning capacity in my chosen profession until about 4 years ago when I was laid-off about two weeks before 9/11, I couldn&#039;t get an interview (let alone a job) given my age and the glut of Chemical Engineers caused mostly by the Government&#039;s H1B and L1 visa programs. 
One of my daughters is a Registered Nurse. Shortly after she began working, I asked her if many of her colleagues were foreigners â€“ Asians or Latinos. She told me that 8 of the ten nurses on her shift on her floor were from Canada. This was shortly after the Socialists in Canada had nationalized their health-care industry.
