Thanks Stefan for pointing out some of the conceptual problems, if not outright contradictions, in using the “core” rate of inflation to measure the degree of price change. And also thanks for noting the at times shifting, non-consistent, and apparently self-serving use of the two inflation measures by policy makers and commentators.
