Talking butts: a smoking documentary.

July 29, 2005 by

Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 911, Roger and Me, Bowling for Columbine, and Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me have been leading the trend of documentary film making as of late. Liberty and free market minded film lovers have few alternative opportunities for viewing. Filling such a void is Bretigne Shaffer’s recent addition to the Mises Media section, Talking Butts. I greatly enjoyed the breif film, recomend it to any agitated smoker out there, and look forward to more films of its type in the future.

You forgot about the Oscar-winning Born into Brothels, which stirred up some resentment among India’s prostitutes for depicting them as necesarily neglegent mothers in need of white salvation. Or government intervention. On the other hand, I rather liked two of the Micheal Moore films you listed…I also liked Super-Size Me, now that I think about it.

There’s so much to say about that Cigarette theme and government … I’m eager to watch the movie in Europe! My wife did research and published a small book in Germany this year on that same subject… It does correspond with some revelations in that trailer as far as I could see. In her book she mainly advocates a method based on cigarettes without nicotine which is very successful to stop the psychological addiction though. Still, here’s one of the books anecdote that fits the discussion:

There’s mainly one French company in Europe selling the smokes without nicotine (of course everyone can roll his own mix of herbs…). As they came out in Germany, the government got warned pretty soon (guess who did it) that a new brand was on the market… bypassing the law! What law? The law inflicting high taxes on tobacco products of course! So this brand is now stamped with the tobacco tax, and costs twice as much …

By the way, we might be looking soon for a (native) English speaking translator with smooth German knowledge since we think the subject would obviously be of interest in the US too. Perhaps somebody can give us a hint where to look for…
