This post is per the request of Mr. Adam Martin…
Imagine Star Wars but Han Solo was the main character instead of Luke Skywalker. Though it’s not a full length film yet, “Firefly” may deserve a strong place on the listing of films of libery. The series has strong libertarian threads running through each episode. Here are some select quotes:
“That’s what governments are for: to get in a man’s way.”
“A government is just a group of people, usually notably ungoverned.”
The crew of the space craft act as salvagers and liberators just trying to get by in an intergalactic totalitarian state. Read Roderick Long’s post on the series at the Austro-Athenian Empire.
The movie following up the series, “Serenity,” is coming out on September 30. The SciFi channel is going to start airing the TV series next Friday evening. A point of note is that the episodes will air in their intended order unlike their original Fox broadcasts.

My personal favorite:
Mal: You called the Feds.
Jayne: What?!?! I got pinched!!!
Mal: Which is what happens… when you call the Feds.
You have the names confused; Firefly is the television series, Serenity is the name of the upcoming film, which is named after the ship.
It is really hard to think of any element of Firefly that isn’t libertarian/ancap.
The show is centered on a group of outlaws who “steal” from the government, smuggle goods, and try and stay one step ahead of “the Feds” while trying to make a profit. Its a great blend of sci-fi and western.
Prostitution is legal, guns are everywhere, and most of the laws seem to be privately made. (For instance, there was one episode where they merely danced around a fire to get married instead of asking for state permission.)
It is a really fun show.
That is all for now. I’ll be in my bunk.
Firefly will be on the scifi channel starting this Friday.
See the start of Joss Whedon’s acclaimed SF series! SCI FI Friday follows at 8/7C. — Friday, July 22, at 7/6C – http://scifi.com/
“I’ll be in my bunk.”
Great reference.
