January 27, 2012 by

On Monday, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation interviewed Hans Hermann-Hoppe, whom they introduce as “the world’s leading living libertarian philosopher.”  Listen here!

Hoppe utopian fantasy is unsustainable.

Privatization of the military will lead to cartels ostensibly designed to lower costs to the consumer. However, the establishment of these cartels will lead to territorial monopolies of armed force and the emergence of absolutism in short order.

This is one of the many causal mechanisms that have resulted in exactly ZERO anarcho-capitalist societies emerging and sustaining itself.

You should read more of this site. There’s plenty of literature about anarcho-capitalist society in the American West. It was sustainable, I assure you. Had the people of western states not been so naive as to join the union, most of the Western US would still be stateless.

… the establishment of these cartels will lead to territorial monopolies of armed force and the emergence of absolutism in short order … “

Firstly, nobody refers to “libertarian utopias” except for people who don’t understand what libertarians are saying. There is no such thing as a utopia. The question is, which type of society is better, one organized by peaceful, voluntary cooperation or one that is organized under threat of violence. Both logic and history give very clear answers to this question.

Secondly, the danger to free societies is not the emergence of tyrants from within the society but the threat of attack from bandits from outside of the society. That is the historical basis of nearly every government in existence today. But it is better to live in fear of a foreign invasion than to voluntarily throw away freedom. In other words, it is absurd to say that libertarians must abandon their freedom and submit as slaves to a tyrant from within their own society, in order to gain protection from a foreign tyrant from enslaving them at some future date. You might as well say that all wild game animals should walk into a farm and lock themselves in a paddock, because otherwise they might be hunted down some day.

And who’s Blackwater’s biggest client in Iraq and elsewhere?

Vegemite January 27, 2012 at 11:20 pm

And just who might the biggest client of Blackwater be?

Vegemite January 27, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Who’s Blackwater’s biggest client?

Antipodean January 27, 2012 at 11:37 pm

Blackwater’s best client is…?

Ireland 650-1650

I’d list more and tell about how they “beat” the “problem” of territorial monopolies, but you’re just a trolling faggot

Cartels can ONLY exist through the ‘blessing’ and enabling of the State. Better go back to your study instead of narrow-mindedness, lazy intellect, and preconceived bias that has led to your mental paralysis. Besides, you have NO historic context to indicate any such outcomes had ever occurred. And any and all examples you may provide would be because of corruption with State monopoly rule and privilege and would become starkly obvious if objectively, intelligently, and honestly investigated.

“This is one of the many causal mechanisms that have resulted in exactly ZERO anarcho-capitalist societies emerging and sustaining itself.”

The goal of libertarian anarchists is to change people’s belief systems. If people *believe* they need a government, obviously they will create one. That is why my debates with other people online center around changing their dogmatic belief systems, instead of advertising the incentives of anarcho-capitalism.

When you talk about privatization of the military, you are in essence talking about privatization of the police. You have not given any evidence that private protection agencies will result in monopolies. Remember that if consumers DEMAND that armed forces don’t become governments, then it won’t happen. Period. If consumers don’t give a shit, the armed forces will become governments. But if you are going to move to Chicago, for instance, you don’t worry that there isn’t going to be any food there, because consumers DEMAND food.

There’s also the small snag that monopolies can ONLY develop via indulgence by the state; that is the essential definition of the term.

This was a superb discussion with Hoppe; besides the interviewer being extremely gracious, courteous, and legitimately engaged, Hoppe was clear and able to succinctly respond to every question because you know he’s done the analysis intellectually from all angles. There’s a reason he’s the Dean of the Austrian school.

Years ago, I used to send these blokes at Counterpoint email after email begging them to feature Hoppe. I even sent them a copy of “Democracy…”. Thanks go out to the conference conveners for dragging the ABC horse to water, and making the nag drink, where I was clearly unsuccessful.
