First-Ever Private Spaceport Nears Final Approval

May 24, 2004 by

Could the stifling State layer that surrounds our planet and cuts us off from space finally be opening up for entrepreneurship? Slashdot reports:

“According to the article on Space.com, the Federal Aviation Administration is nearing the final stages of certifying the Mojave Airport as the first-ever private spaceport. Both Scaled Composites and XCOR Aerospace (the two leading competitors in the X-Prize competition) currently fly out of Mojave Airport. The approval of a commercial spaceport will certainly facilitate the creation of even more private-sector space technologies.”

I don’t think East Kern Airport District is a private entity. Even the original article at Space.com gets it wrong with “first federal spaceport” as Alaska’s Kodiak Island is not federal.

Also, XCOR is not a XPrize competitor.
