“Emersonian Individualism” by Allen Mendenhall

Emerson didn’t always seem self-reliant or individualistic. His politics, to the extent that they are knowable, could not be called libertarian. We’re better off judging Emerson on the basis of his words, which could be called libertarian, even if they endow individualism with a religiosity that would make some people uncomfortable.

Any serious doubt concerning the validity of aggregates and averages is a dagger aimed straight at the heart of current empirical research and statistical analysis.
