The movie is good. Take a look at the trailer here. It seems like an accurate history of J. Edgar Hoover’s life, from what I know. He was clearly a fascist and a psychotic of various sorts. His use of drugs late in his life reminded me of Hitler. He was constantly plotting to get more money, power, and authority for the FBI. He was also constantly breaking the law and using his access to information to blackmail politicians, including many of the Presidents of the 20th century. The movie helps to chronicle the history of the decline of liberty and the rise of the Federal police state.
Has anyone else seen the movie?

Of course, Presidents have gotten better since those bad old days. Nothing of that sort could happen today. Right?
We need more regulations on government.
I saw it and liked it. I thought it was a great look at the steady creep toward more power from bureaucracies. I call it a vote of no confidence in the Federal government from Eastwood.
It wasn’t a perfect movie. But it was well worth my time.
Agree with your politics and assessment of J. Edgar, but in my opinion the movie was slow to the point of being painfully boring. I couldn’t wait for the thing to be over. Sure, it made Hoover look bad from several dimensions and that’s fine with me — but I just didn’t find the portrayal convincing in the least. For me, it was a total waste of about two and a half hours. It’s a shame, Clint Eastwood has made so many great movies.
The film is a cure for insomnia. But it was not a flattering portrayal of Hoover or government and that is a rare treat from Hollywood. As for Clint’s direction he should avoid the non-linear storytelling, chronological order suits him better.
I don’t necessarily agree with this review, but I found it thought provoking and full of a perspective and information I did not even know was out there:

As I said I thought it was a “good” movie. Other people I know thought it was either a B, B+, or A movie (no A+s). Here is Roger Ebert’s take on the movie.
