Many of my fellow Austrians have shown the outsourcing of the production of goods and services in the marketplace to be beneficial to society at large. The same cannot be said, however, for subcontracting foreign policy. Indeed, the American government’s propensity to outsource certain aspects of its military activities to regional governments or local non-state organizations has rendered Washington’s already reckless and aggressive brand of adventurism all the more dangerous to the world and America itself. A well-written article, and difficult to disagree with its general thrust. However, I would take a slightly more nuanced viewpoint: we should support those who favor democracy, and let the chips fall where they may. Clearly, supporting dictators and despots because it suits our short-term convenience is a strategy for long-term disaster, and unfortunately that long-term is finally arriving. When I read that Iraq’s top Shiite leader is demanding free elections and that the U.S. will not agree, it makes me want to cry.
“We should support those who favor democracy”?
Who is this “we”? Libertarians should support dictators above democracy, if that’s the only choice — neither is support for liberty but at least dictators die sooner or later!
The article is a good argument for not invading Iraq – we have our hands full with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Another reason is that the $200 billion + that we’ll be spending on the war is just as likely to buy us more trouble as improved security at home.
