And spending the money on personal yachts or whatever Hughes spent the re-stolen money on is far less damaging than what the FTC normally does with its resources.

The libertarian rationale would say:

It depletes the government’s resources which are no longer available to further encroach on the public. The money was already stolen when it was taxed off your paycheck. It’s not how it’s spent that is the problem, it’s how it’s acquired.

It’s not their money, so why should they care? People will either pay taxes or be locked in a cage. Or, just print some more, who cares?

Put him in jail? Make him head of the agency! This man has done more good for the world than anyone else at the FTC has ever done.
