Joyeux Anniversaire Frédéric!

July 1, 2011 by

Today (or some say yesterday or the day before) is the 209th birthday of Frederic Bastiat, one of the great champions of freedom and inspiration to countless economists, academics, and advocates of liberty. He was a 19th century French political economist who wrote brilliant, and concise works on law, commerce, and liberty.

Economic Harmonies
The Law
Economic Sophisms

And, we should not forget his spiritual heir, who he declared on his deathbed, Gustave de Molinari.

Bastiat came into the world a little under a decade before Thomas Paine left.
…Man is naturally inclined to avoid pain and since labor is pain in itself it follows that men will resort to plunder whenever plunder is easier than work (Bastiat).
Arms discourage and keep the invader and plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property (Paine).

That was a great piece of information, I enjoyed reading it.

So Bastiat and Rockwell share the same birthday. Coincidence? or reincarnation?
