The New York Times reports on a Nevada company that “finds newspaper material that has been republished on the Web — usually an article, excerpts or a photograph — and obtains the copyrights.” Then it sues.

These Righthaven folks are treading on dangerous ground. So far, all Righthaven has done is to reinforce and possibly expand the concept of fair use (exactly the opposite of what they hoped to achieve). The NYT article is pretty weak and doesn’t discuss any of the precedents and missteps that this idiocy has caused.
