It's interesting to see how well versed he was not just in business and marketing but economics too. He shows more knowledge of real economics in these writings than many modern-day PHDs do. It's also interesting to see how many similar "concerns" there were back then, over 100 years ago, to modern times, with his words directed to those asking of small businesses. Not too much has changed. The way he speaks of newspapers is how many people now speak of the internet. Quite a remarkable guy.

Wanamaker's stores in the Philiadelphia area always had a great reputation and now I understand why. Wanamaker built his business without government small business loans or subsidies, bailouts or central planners and without a business degree from Harvard or the University of Pennsylvania. His education was work and life. Thanks for a geat article.

A very good read. My eyes have noticed one common attribute among expert persons in multiple disciplines along the way. That is; arrive early, focus, work hard and stay late to continue to progress at what ever you do, wherever you do it. This trait, the desire to "put in the time" necessary to develop a deep understanding of one's chosen profession appears throughout history, amongst all highly successful people or as I call them "top producers of their trade". Mises visitors and students whom are on the younger side of life, should practice time commitment in everything you want to do exceptionally well. You must develop such the exceptional trait as early in your professional development as possible.

Put in all the time and then some that is necessary for you to become a complete knowledge master within your chosen profession (both in terms of study and practical working knowledge). Although it is never too late to start practicing time commitment, it does get more difficult with age for a number of reasons that I will not bore you with. Developing such an outstanding characteristic early in life will increase your probability of meeting with great success.
