“Mises Weekly” Podcast

March 16, 2011 by

Here is a first go at a new podcast: “Mises Weekly”, a two-hour discussion of all the previous week’s Mises Daily Articles between myself and Abhi Mallick. Sorry, audio quality on this one is not too good. But let us know if this is something we should pursue further!

I like this idea and think it has potential. Audio quality is very important though. I would suggest for both of you getting this microphone: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Yeti-USB-Microphone/dp/B002VA464S . I just recently spent a few days researching high quality USB microphones for myself and that one comes out as best bang for the buck for serious podcasting.

I don’t know how you recorded but with Skype and a good plugin and that microphone it should be able to sound very good.

Consider a pop filter too. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dmi&field-keywords=pop+filter&x=0&y=0

Another trick is to get a splash screen that you would use to block food spit from a frying pan or a strainer and talk through that. It will block out harsh blow-back for certain words like a hard P. You’ll get the sound out, but won’t blow air across the mic, improving the audio quality.

This is great stuff, and a very good idea. It’s great that there are so many innovators working for the Mises Institute in some way.

Can you make it like that we can save it onto our computer? (So I can put it on my Ipod.)

Hi Adrian,
Just right-click (or control-click on a Mac) on the link, and select “Save Link As…” (or the equivalent) to download.

It’s not a podcast if it does not have a podcast feed. Talk to the guy(s) who take care of Media section, I heard they have a plenty of free feeds ;-)

This is wonderful. I constantly troll the Mises media section waiting for the latest speeches and panel talks. I’m also a huge fan of the Lew Rockwell podcasts. Please keep this up!

Two hours? Yeesh. I mean, that’s good for us, but that’s going to be taxing for you guys, especially doing it weekly.

Great idea, I’m really glad you’re taking this on. If you find that your schedules only permit say, one hour or half an hour per week that would be cool too.

A fun topic to add every week would be “Austrians in the mainstream” to discuss the latest praise or criticisms to be found in the likes of the NYT, CNN, etc. For example you could have the Krugman Report, or direct people to nice articles like CNN’s recent “The Fed’s Greatest Blunders”. Another fun recurring topic would be, “If you’re Austrian then how come you’re not rich”, in which you summarize the markets and discuss how an Austrian-thinking investor might have done in the last month. You could check the performance gold versus S&P index versus official and unofficial inflation (shadowstats) versus the funds managed by Austrian-influenced people like Schiff, Marc Faber and Jim Rogers. Another suggestion – “What in the World” where you summarize what the various non-US Mises and Rothbard institutes have published. You could check up on pseudo-libertarian beltway organizations like Cato and Adam Smith once and a while for comic relief.

If you’re determined to do 2 hours every week then stuff like this might help keep people tuned in. And if you’re going to do this for any length of time make sure you structure it so you can write off all your computer equipment, internet, etc. which seems to be one of the main reasons why many people do podcasts (LOL)
