The citizens of these countries are taking their fate into their own hands, just as it should be, and not waiting for others to free them. It is very possible that Libyan citizens will end up unseating the dictator that Reagan did not unseat — the dictator his successors ended up backing. FULL ARTICLE

“If you listen to the speeches and hear the voices of the young, what you hear are the ideas of 1776. It is the language of universal human rights — the very American creed.”
This is the type of thinking that ends up getting you beaten, gang raped, and accused of being an Israeli Jew in the middle of Tahir Square.
Speaking from experience are you? You were in Tahir Square, were you?
Pillock.

The US has had issues with Libya ever since the 1800′s. Back then the Barbary pirates ruled the trading routes in the Mediterranean. Jefferson refused to pay the bribe and sent his marines to the Tripoli. 180 years later, Libya was again provoking the US in the Mediterranean. First there was the Gulf of Sidra , where Libya refused to respect the international waters off their coast. The US shot down two fighter jets and later sunk some small war ships. Qaddafi retaliated with Berlin bombing. Reagan responded by bombing Qaddafi’s Palace. Qaddafi then retaliated again by supporting and funding the Lockerbie Pan Am 103 terrorist attack that killed 270 people. I don’t think Bush ever embraced Qaddafi like Blair did. However, the US saw the prudence in tolerating the dictator while they could dismantle his Nuclear Program. Once done, the US should have put pressure on Libya to reform. As we have seen sanctions against dictators and Rogue regimes end don’t work and end up benefitting those in power. What dictator has been forced out by sanctions? Pre-emptive strikes like the one in Iraq are considered war crimes. What is the US to do? This is a no win situation. If you trade with a ruthless dictator, you are complicit in his crimes against his people. If you refuse to trade with the ruthless dictator, you are committing crimes against the citizens by not allowing them to purchase the necessities. The answer may lie in the democracies of the world uniting against tyranny. That is always hard to organize. Who is going to lead? Libyans have risen up in revolt without help from Western countries and the US. But if these nations like Libya are to have a chance at democracy and liberty, the US and her allies must step in and provide the necessary assistance to ensure a transition to a friendly government. How that is done is to espouse the value inculcated within each and every one of us that we are all created equal with certain inalienable rights endowed by our creator.
You ask, “what is the US to do?” Well, that’s the wrong question to be asking in the first instance, nevertheless I’ll tell you where the answer may be found. Look up President Washington’s comments on the subject (foreign affairs, diplomatic entanglements, international trade and military adventurism in other lands). He reiterates the position in his retirement speech.

“So it is something of a shock to discover that in fact Libya is ruled by a lifetime dictator who, like Mubarak and all his fellow US-backed dictators from North Africa to the Gulf states, is willing to kill and slaughter hundreds and thousands in order to maintain his rule.”
Yes, so unlike the peaceful Iranian Mullahs, God bless them, and peaceful Hamas and Hezbolah, and peaceful Mr Asad, God bless them all. They are courageously standing up to the Great Satan and Little Satan, and will obliterate the Nazi Zionist Entity, Inshalah. Alah U Akbar, down with the evil American imperialism!

So why does the US support these murderers? Why do your rulers fund them, give them arms, train them in the ways of suppression and torture?
And why do YOU support such behaviours?

It is not clear what “murderers” you are referring to – Iranian mullahs, or Hamas, or Hezbolah, or whom?
