The press in Las Vegas has stumbled on to a secret calender between firefighters indicating who is going to be sick on certain days and who can fill in and earn time and a half.
The calender wasn’t posted in the firehouse near the shinny pole, but was kept at the firefighters’ private homes to avoid scrutiny.
Three of the people listed on the calender are Fire Battalion Chiefs with total annual pay and benefits in 2009 of $315,000 to $345,000.

I wonder if the “total pay and benefits” includes the present value of the gold-plated guaranteed retirement income that these parasites can expect to get.
‘Cause you can’t buy that sort of thing, when you have to pay for it yourself.
Now, multiply that theft by a few hundred thousand “public servant” parasites, and you have a core pro-state voting bloc that can be counted on to get time off of “work” on election day.
I can understand wanting to avoid scrutiny. Posting the calendar in the fire department HQ would be too much of a… Gamble!
That sucks big time but I can’t muster the same outrage if it was say, police. That whole protect and serve bit actually fits firefighters somewhat.
But making over a quarter mil is RI-GODDAMN-DICULOUS.
Unions, baby. They know how to pillage.
“Calender”?
LOL, who said that Las Vegas isn’t run by gangsters.
This also reminds me of the article by Jeffrey Tucker (I think) about police officers purposefully giving ridiculous, nit-picking traffic violations in hopes that the citizen will try to appeal it, because if they try to appeal it, the officer has to show up in court which means overtime pay baby!
Also, check out the related article on this same issue: http://blog.mises.org/12055/is-this-why-little-kids-want-to-grow-up-to-be-firefighters/. The Las Vegas fire fighter mentioned made an extra $80,000 filling in for “sick” people in addition to her $93,000 base salary. Damn, why am I wasting my time in school
Gaming the system is as old and true as any biblical-sized sin. The solution is the abolishment of the system, of course, but we can be dang sure the system will stay.
In my area I used to wonder why at least two FD vehicles showed up for every little fender-bender. Then I found out: putting more $$$ on the paycheck.
Around here you have to watch out for the volunteer firefighters flying down the highway with their little red lights blazing. All so they can get their $100 or whatever it is.
Organized crime within organized crime. What a concept.
Who knew firefighting was so lucrative? Obviously I missed my calling.
