It looks atrocious. Which sucks for us :(

Rocky February 12, 2011 at 2:27 am

Punk rock isn’t pretty

The story behind how this movie is being made, and how it will be released is pretty exhilarating. Everything about it is anti-Hollywood – and in my mind, that’s a wonderful thing

CRC February 12, 2011 at 9:51 am

Why?

Lew Rockwell panned it here too: http://www.lewrockwell.com/blog/lewrw/archives/78269.html

Can someone explain why they think the trailer makes the film look bad?

Mona February 12, 2011 at 1:48 pm

People who are afraid WOULD will do (say) anything to downplay a movie that depicts a REAL hero. I think the trailer suits the message of the movie (book) and I’m SO excited to see it!

J. Murray February 12, 2011 at 8:10 pm

I’m fearful because movies typically wreck the full meaning behind books, no matter how good the film is when stood up by itself.

And why is this home made ‘trailer’ of the movie more exciting and moving?

It looks good to me. What is wrong with it?

Friedrich February 12, 2011 at 4:42 am

I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

Have a look at the sad history of this and other attempts at making Atlas. It is a story that is 100% about an egregious IP policy on the part of the copyright holder. In a free market, there would otherwise already be 5 or 10 versions of Atlas by now, and maybe or two would be great. In other words – irony of ironies – Atlas the movie was wrecked by a government grant of monopoly privilege.

Still I wish these great people who made this all success. They certainly earned it after all they’ve been through.

Excellent point.

I just hope the characters in the movie aren’t as awful as the ones in the book. People don’t act or talk like that. Maybe someone in cinema can bail out bad characters.

Why not make a cartoon version of Atlas Shrugged then? That seemed to work for the talking pigs in Animal Farm.

Mona February 12, 2011 at 1:45 pm

I am SO excited about this movie!
I LOVED the book and the philosophy behind the story.

Rick February 12, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Well, the production value and the scale of it look good. But the acting and directing look a bit soap opera at first glance. In the actors defense, these are challenging characters to play. That said, I’m happy a movie adaptation has finally happened. I wouldn’t be surprised to see critics pan it, just because it’s Rand, but I’ll probably go see it anyway.

Great, I can’t wait to see John and Dagny gunning down all those filthy capitalists off a bulleting train with an M60! Or um communists. I forget what the book was about.

Anyway I hate to judge a book by its cover, but it seems to suffer from a gross miscasting and setting issues. First of all, nobody gives a hoot about railroads any more. It’s not romantic, it’s not relevant to today’s issues. Most of the railroad business today seems to be federally controlled anyway. They might have just as well been selling kerosene lamps. It would have been much better if the film was set in an appropriate 1950′s film noir setting in the vein of Catch me if You Can or Howard Hughes.

Personally I think Hugo Weaving would have made a great John Galt too.

> I can’t wait to see John and Dagny gunning down all those filthy capitalists…….I forget what the book was about.

So it would seem… :-)

Oh, great. This is just terrible.

Capn Mike February 12, 2011 at 9:02 pm

I dunno, looked ok to me.

Actually, the first time someone said “Who is John Galt?” I kinda got a chill.

Like the man said: “It usually starts with Ayn Rand.”

Kids’ve gotta start somewhere. My son loves her and I just smile and nod. Through her, then on to Rothbard. Sneaky me teehee.

I think the trailer is geared to get some mass-market traction for the film and really cannot be used to predict the quality of the final product. Those who know the book will likely see the movie regardless of the trailer, but there are many, many more seats to be filled. That is the only job of the trailer.

There is plenty of other on-line material out there, in addition to this trailer, that gives me hope for a pretty good film rendition of the book. If I understand correctly, this 4-hour movie is only Part 1. That means a lot of potential for something either really good or really bad.

Cool story bro..Haha just kidding! Just a little internet humor! But on a more serious note I really like your blog and I think you should try google adsense to monetize it. You would make bank!

Nuke Gray February 13, 2011 at 9:19 pm

I think the movie is designed for people who are already objectivists. I don’t think the trailer will appeal to those who have not read the book. And i think it should have been set in the fifties, in a contrarian time-track (a what-might-have-been). Also, Mr. Reardan is described as tall, and the acter seems average height- couldn’t they have tried for a tall guy?
That said, if they can do something like The Lord Of The Rings, where each film is itself exciting and watchable, then good luck!

Sione February 13, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Trailer looks OK to me.

Could be a good time for this film I reckon. After all you guys in the US have a right socialist in power and stuff is just failing all over the show. Perhaps people might make the connection…..

Looks like a made for TV movie (10 million dollar budget). And it would have been encouraging to see an actual star/celebrity in the film.

Rob February 14, 2011 at 10:44 pm

LOL, you want A list actors and the lower 95% to be interested in a movie about the poor, poor underappreciated wealthy elite? Yeah…good luck with that. Stick to your Ron Paul rallies where reality doesn’t interfere with your hilarious fantasies where no taxes + no central government + no regulating of Wall Street + every man for himself chaos = Uphoria for all.

Sione February 15, 2011 at 1:59 am

Rob

Now, now. Don’t get your knickers in a knot. Try not to get so excited.

You know you don’t have to go to the movie. And since the ideas it is based on scare you so, perhaps you’d be better off staying in your cot sucking your wee pink pacifier. Come to think of it, perhaps you’d be better off staying away from this website. After all it clearly causes you to suffer such hysterical terrors! Can’t have you waking up at night wet in your own piss.
