They Chose Liberty

January 12, 2011 by

I defy anyone to read these stories and still aver that our leaders are cold-hearted folk who relish nothing so much as the specter of people suffering from poverty, and, to boot, are in the pay of rich capitalist exploiters. FULL ARTICLE by Walter Block

I’m a fan of Walter, but I’m afraid he’s being a little too conciliatory when he mentions “uproarious laughter” in response to his position on free-market environmentalism. I’m a little more derisive. I call it the “dismissive giggle,” and it’s a cheap debating trick (most often employed by the left): make it seem like your position is so preposterous that it deserves nothing more than a giggle. I’ve had it happen to me on a few occasions, and I’m very direct and sardonic when I call the person on it.

Conciliatory? Send these videos to Webster’s and I’d think they would post Dr. Block’s picture next to the word.

[Or maybe they'd link the videos under "surreal"]

Favorite part: “This gentleman reads Malthus differently than I do.” God, I’m rolling.

I think in watching these videos, we’d have say that Walter is also quite courageous. And he truly knows his subject. I liked his analogy of the mouse on the elephant on the bridge.

Oh my, poor Walter. North Korea doing better, McDonalds’ killing people…

Just wanted to say that this was a great book. I very much enjoyed it, and it introduced me to some thinkers that I hadn’t been familiar with before reading it. I believe I most enjoyed Lew Rockwell’s interview piece – very insightful. My only major complaint – I kind of wished that it wasn’t (nearly) entirely academics. Maybe a volume two featuring mostly libertarian-minded entrepreneurs? We don’t hear from them enough.

Walter is too nice and patient…a guy of his character and intelligence up against this angry, misguided duo…oh my.

While the intellectuals like to read. Sometimes a cartoon is more widely watched.
