Quality and professional tax return preparation is on its way

November 11, 2010 by

Yes, you were likely concerned that rogue tax return preparers were roaming the country, doing shoddy tax returns for unsuspecting taxpayers. The IRS is fixing this problem by requiring tax preparers to have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Tax preparers must pay $64.25 for the PTIN of which $50 is to pay for outreach, technology, and compliance efforts associated with the new program and the third-party vendor will receive $14.25 per user to operate the online system and provide customer support.

But this is only the beginning, says IRS Commissioner Doug Schulman. “This is an important first step because it lays the groundwork in our efforts to ensure the quality and integrity of professional tax return preparation, which most taxpayers rely on in one form or another,”

“My opinion is that it will eventually clean up the industry, at least to some extent, and lead to higher quality tax preparers,” Tom Bingham of Bingham Tax Consultants told the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Individual taxpayers will not be penalized (for now) if they rely on unregistered tax preparers, but those using unregistered preparers can expect a notice from the IRS, according to David Williams, head of the new Return Preparer Office at the IRS.

All of this registering and fee paying will likely lead to higher prices for tax return preparation. For those thinking maybe they should just go it alone, complete their own returns and call the IRS if they have questions: A Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report confirmed back in 2004 that the IRS gives wrong answers to tax questions 35% of the time.

Here is an easier way to prevent rouge tax return preparer from roaming the country, abolish the IRS and repeal the 16th amendment. Problem solved.

Just wait, they’ll call you filing your own taxes a professional service and force you to pay an additional $64.50 and fill out more paperwork just to file your own.

Nah. They’ll say, “if you choose not to use an approved tax preparer, you’ll have to pay a processing fee”. You know, because people make mistakes filling their tax papers, and IRS workers aren’t paid to correct anyone’s mistakes.

Will IRS employees also be qualified?

Why does a “tax preparation” industry exist in the first place? I forgot, the government doesn’t just tell you how much of your money it wants to steal. It makes you hire somebody to fill out complicated forms so that it can steal your money.

Not only does Uncle Sam want your money, but he wants you to have to go through the trouble of determining just how much of your money he wants! No wonder he provides a “refund” of some of that money so that he can deceive the ignorant and the gullible into believing that they are getting “free money” from a gang of criminals that are robbing them and enslaving them.

If the IRS wants to steal money from people, the least that they could do would be to tell their victims exactly how much money they want.

It would be so much easier if we just implanted a chip at birth that could track flows of “money.” The chip could conveniently track every dime that comes in and out, making sure to clip the State’s share of each transaction. No tax returns, no paperwork and complete “freedom” for all “citizens.” This chip could be the first step to paradise on earth.

Digicash has nothing on this. Imagine all the other applications. For example, instead of aiming a radar gun at a speeding car and then initiating a host of paperwork that results in a fine, a cop could just aim a debit ray at the speeder’s head and extract the fine on the spot. Save trees! Save money!

I suspect most of these tax preparers will go out of business anyways due to competition from the likes of TurboTax.

I was going to say that it may prohibit the number of people preparing bogus returns who are usually found serving illegal immigrants, but California already requires TP’s to register with the state and there were still plenty of bogus returns with stolen SSN’s file out of Calif over the past 7 yrs.

I am seriously going to start using all of that! Thank you so much, I am not even kidding! There is nothing that I hate more than coming up with content all the time to barely keep our real estate blog up. It’s just so time consuming – so thanks again!
