“that led to a spike…in drug traffic”

Don’t you love how the media draws conclusions for us?

Seattle October 14, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Well of course it did. Sudafed is a drug after all. So’s asprin.

Fephisto October 14, 2010 at 5:27 pm

Touché

J Cortez October 14, 2010 at 2:42 pm

This is out of control.

Greg October 14, 2010 at 2:50 pm

The comments on that article make me a sad panda. 90% of them are along the lines of “CVS is just a greedy corporation, good for the government. The government is just trying to keep us safe from the evils of meth.” The other 10% are from CVS employees and are along the lines of “Don’t punish CVS, punish the manufacturers.”

Here in Oklahoma an out of state resident (say a college student or someone attending a conference) cannot buy pseudoephedrine-based medicine because the state requires an in-state license to purchase. Of course that’s on top of restricting how much one can buy in a certain amount of time and tracking all of it.

Joshua_D October 14, 2010 at 2:58 pm

Well, you know, drug laws have worked so well to control other drugs …

Jeffrey Tucker October 14, 2010 at 3:30 pm

actually I think the whole meth bit is a trick. It’s all about subsidizing one company with political connections.

Horst Muhlmann October 14, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Thank God! This is excellent news!

Did you know that millions of people go to bed at night without congestion? That is unacceptable! Finally we can all sleep soundly tonight now that the menace of clear noses and easy breathing has been eradicated.

Ryan October 14, 2010 at 5:04 pm

CEO Thomas Ryan is a reliable Democratic contributor, except for one slip-up: he gave to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign in 2008 and not to Obama’s. Coincidence?

As with most regulation, thanks to this site and Skip Oliva, we see the “Bigger Picture” and whom the regulation helps along with empowering the “State”!

J. Murray October 14, 2010 at 7:34 pm

And with this, Sudafed will no longer be carried on the market. CVS is unlikely going to make a $75 million profit in a 10 year timespan to cover this fine. Everyone will look at Sudafed, a perfectly good product, and see a liability. Thus, Sudafed is effectively banned.

What a greedy corporation, heartlessly profiting off my chronic sinus problems. If only the government would shut them down so they couldn’t charge me the outrageous price of $10 for a box of CVS brand (look at that evil corporation, branding everything with its name for the sake of that worst of all evils, marketing) pseudoephedrine. I suppose this $75 million fine will have to do. Maybe because of it they’ll lower the price to $5 which would of course still be unconscionable gouging, but at least it sticks it to the man.

(seriously, i’d buy 4 boxes a month if the government would let me, because it’s so cheap. as it is, i have to buy 1 and ration it out to myself.)

Matt M October 14, 2010 at 10:19 pm

If there was ever a national mood that would be conducive to a company, yes even a big evil corporation, standing up for itself, this is that environment. Americans are fed up of bloated government. This is the environment where CVS should have defended itself thru a massive PR campaign. Instead it puts tail between legs. I don’t get it.

Stephen Grossman October 15, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Altruism defeats principled resistance to the demand for obedience. And the govts legal power to arbitrarily destroy ,ie, regulate and tax, a company makes speaking out dangerous. Read _Atlas Shrugged_ and you will get it.

Walt D. October 14, 2010 at 11:32 pm

This sounds like a crock of you know what – how many boxes of sudafed would it take, and how much would it cost, to to make the equivalent of one ritalin pill that can be purchased by any teenager from a classmate for a few dollars?

Walt D. October 14, 2010 at 11:35 pm

What we need is a constitutional amendment allowing juries to acquit if they determine that a law is stupid. (I’m sure Stephan would tell me that we already have jury nullification. However, it needs to be made explicit.)

Joshua_D October 15, 2010 at 9:05 am

Judge: Has the jury reached a verdict?

Juror: Yes. That law is stupid.

Judge: Case dismissed.

HA! Love it.

Dewaine October 15, 2010 at 2:15 am

Monthly drug testing should be required of all elected officials and gov’t employees. It is time to get serious in this war on drugs.

Curt Howland October 15, 2010 at 6:59 am

It would be interesting it CVS itself were to come out against the war on some drugs.
Imagine “How much is the drug war really costing you?” flyers at check-out stands….

Horst Muhlmann October 15, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Check out the AP’s spin on this story. They make it sound like CVS has meth labs in its stores. Disgusting.
