And BTW, isopropol alcohol if ingested can kill you. Why not simply replace it with regular alcohol (like found in wine, etc.)? The reason is to discourage people from avoiding the tax on alcohol used in beverages. So, here we have deliberate poisoning of something for pure government taxation reasons.
Thanks for this powerful post. It dovetails nicely with your suggested reading of "The Law" which I read on the way home from the Supporters Summit. Bastiat articulates so fluently the difference between justice and the law. I encourage Mises to bring more issues of criminal justice and state regulation into its content, since the criminal justice system and state regulation are the "enforcement arm" of Statism. The federalization of every crime, vague laws subject to generous interpretation, and the increasing deprivation of rights guaranteed in the constitution are a huge and disturbing trend.

We can suffer through life without pseudoephedrine and still maintain a clear conscience. The most destructive laws are the ones that require us to oppress our neighbors. There is nothing more debilitating than a guilty conscience, making a population easy to control - after all everybody does it, right?

Here's an idea- why not have a citizen's police force? Any one who volunteers to be a citizen has to do patrol duty, taking their turn to enforce the laws.
I'm sure most don't recall that there's a sty med that used to be sold over the counter. It's called yellow mercuric oxide. About 10 years ago I couldn't find my tube of it and had an itchy eye. I asked the pharmacist, a man in his 30s and he never heard of it. Finally I found an older pharmacist who remembered it and told me it's not been available for years. I finally found an old tube (still works great) and found the old company that made it. I emailed them and they told me that because it has the word mercuric in the name the FDA banned it. Now if you get a sty you get some useless medicine.

It turns out I actually have 2 tubes of it, each over 15 years old, and I still use it now and then. It's great for any eye infection and soothes a sty.

I plan to will my 2 tubes, to my heirs in the event I don't ever use them up. I feel like someone in the late 30's who had a gold coin.

In my view, at the basic level it's violent thieving thugs who are the enemy. Sometimes, they are criminals and sometimes the enshrined state. I think what makes the state the enemy in all cases is that it always devolves into (if not starting out as) a band of violent thieving thugs. It attracts those who are criminals due to the power invested in it by the ignorant masses.
