The idea was born dead and was never of any consequence nor importance.
There has never been any "Libertarian" movement nor there will ever be: of course there are many individuals that are well read in Von Mises, Rothbard, Hayek etc but they carry exactly zero weight.
Oh, and the local "free market foundations" are a colossal joke.

Here in Ireland we have a similar intellectual and political climate. Even though decades of statism have driven us to bankruptcy, only a small minority seems to be drawing the appropriate conclusions. It annoys me no end to see my friends, many of whom would be regarded as "educated", still cling to the same myths and to see the general public still assume that all we need is a change of political party. I read Mises.org and a whole bunch of other US sources and can only envy how more developed the freeedom movement is in the USA - I would love nothing better than to live there where libertatians at least have a fighting chance.

Libertarianism is foreign everywhere. It is like atheism. Not acceptable. Because it proposes the inconceivable concept of personal responsibility. Humanity have always been chained, for security reasons, to the idea of omnipotent gods, kings and presidents. Libertarianism proposes to think for ourselves. Absolutely nuts! It will never happen at national level.

My suggestion is: Let us make a libertarian community somewhere and let the rest live their pious dream as they like it: worshiping their favorite politician.

Yes, the Libertarian culture is an absolute stranger in Italy. Mr Berlusconi says he's liberal-minded and he wants a smaller state, but his are just empy words. During his goverments state expenditures have just exploded.
I'm from Italy, I discovered your Libertarian tradition some years ago, and I have a lefist background, coming from one of the most red regions of Italy, Emilia-Romagna.
Even if I have no time for thorough studies of social and economic theories, I think many arguments of the Libertarian traditions are sound and sensible.
As the article points out, in Italy Libertarian words are almost incomprensible, because intellectual life is imbued with marxism, catholicism, etatisme, fascism, mafia, and, at the better, Keynes.
