Teaching the next generation about Liberty is what I am sure your students will appreciate most about your courses because you cannot teach Austrian Economics without teaching them about Liberty ,I wish there were more people studying any reasonably good econ book.What has really captivated me about Mises, Rothbard, Hayek and the other Austrians is how they never seem to lose sight of the purpose of learning and understanding how economics works.

I wish there were more people studying any reasonably good econ book. There probably are differences between how Dr. Murphy teaches and how I was taught. I suspect Dr. Murphy is putting in more pro-free-market dicussion than one normally finds in those courses. I’m sure reading him is better than never reading any economics, which is what I suspect most people are doing. I also think it is a good idea to teach basic economic intuition early, well before the last year of high school. I wish you guys good luck with this type of pedagogical project.

The Mises Academy is a great innovation, I agree. It does, however, with the important component of following lectures, have a serious drawback for those of us who reside in European time zones.

I took the the very first course by the Mises Academy, Dr. Murphy was the instructor. I was amazed at how much I learned, how much I really didn’t know and thought I did. I can honestly say, for the price of a nice dinner for two, the courses are well worth the money. Lengthen your time preference for that nice dinner, and enroll. I’m on my second course with Thomas DiLorenzo and can’t wait for Tom Woods’ class!!!

I graduated with honors in economics from UCLA in 1969. Of course, for econ 101, or whatever the course was called back then, we studied macro and micro using a text book written by one of our professors and not Paul Samuleson’s text which of course was used in virtually every other college and university back then. I still can recall asking one of our instructors during one of the lectures about some theoretical issue, “Professor, are we ever going to be able to take a field trip to the real world?”

After graduating I found that the real world for someone with a degree in economics was being sent by headhunters to Wall Street Brokerage houses to make cold calls, selling stocks. I didn’t take any of those jobs and wound up going to Law School and practicing commercial law for over 30 years.

I must say that in the past several years, I have gone back to my roots a bit and have studied Austrian Economic Theory by reading “Human Action,” lots of Murray Rothbard’s books and quite a few others. The point that I would like to make is that studying Austrian Economic Theory in my mind is much more than anything that I was taught in college economics courses. College economic courses were clearly designed to fit students into a technocratic cubby hole somewhere doing all kinds of analysis that kept them from seeing the entire picture of just how economics fits into the political and sociological structure of our civilization.

What has really captivated me about Mises, Rothbard, Hayek and the other Austrians is how they never seem to lose sight of the purpose of learning and understanding how economics works. The real purpose, as I see it, is to understand what freedom and liberty are all about. What is most frustrating is that as you become engrossed in Austrian Economics, you become disheartened about the state of our country today. You begin to see clearly just how far we have come from the freedom that we have been told we have and just how enmeshed in statism we remain.
