The vigilant alphabet

June 29, 2010 by

On my way home from work I was browbeaten by a timely public service announcement: Acting U.S. Fire Administrator Glenn Gaines wants you to Put Safety In Play During the Fourth of July.

Of course you can be assured that Gaines is vigilant when it comes to your safety. He is, after all, acting U.S. fire administrator of the U.S. Fire Administration.

According to the administration’s website, “As an entity of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, the mission of the USFA is to provide national leadership to foster a solid foundation for our fire and emergency services stakeholders in prevention, preparedness, and response.”

Can you beat that?

Oh, and Gaines maintains a blog on the department website where his most-recent post reminds us that “This weekend, March 13 and 14, we will all be setting our clocks to Daylight Saving Time. The time change is a good reminder to check your smoke alarms.”

That is something I’ve never heard before. No redundancy here.

USFA, FEMA, and DHS. It’s a veritable alphabet soup of safety. I’ll sleep well tonight.

Note: If you are up to the challenge, you can become a Jr. Fire Marshall, just like me.

Government fire administrator, eh?

It’s not the alphabet that matters but the numbers. For example, ’451′ inscribed on their badges.

I can’t believe that I just chose 3 answers wrong before picking the right one on every question just to make sure I still got my certificate.

Not unlike the so-called “public education.” Just be physically present and obtain your “certificate” at the age of 18.

Attendance is not mandatory.

Captain Beatty (aka statist fire administrator) stands ready to counsel all wayward Montags through periods of “improper” thoughts counter to their assigned life mission.

“Out of the nursery into the college and back to the nursery; there’s your intellectual pattern for the past five centuries….” — Captain Beatty to Montag

I know that I, for one, am glad that our local papers and tv stations keeping remind us about how dangerous the heat can be and ways to stay cool and safe. I had planned to do some work in the garden, but I think I’ll just sit inside, in the AC, be cool and stay safe.

Would you like some bread and entertainment while you relax?
