I just got back from my daughters’ dance recital where — you are not going to believe this — adult choreographers had mere children steal the intellectual property of the heirs of Michael Jackson. That’s right, some kids actually did the Moonwalk in a public performance. Wow.
Of course, fans of the rock group the Band and its associated performers already knew that Michael stole the Moonwalk from the great Ronnie Hawkins. Who stole it from … Well, who knows?
I’m certainly no dance aficionado, but I truly doubt even one original move was performed this evening. And that fact hasn’t stymied the development of dance one bit.

I’m not sure moonwalk is copyrighted tough.
The royalties must be piling up for Daniel Webster!
At children’s music competitions in Ontario they enforce their racket selling overpriced sheet music and music books by refusing to grade any contestant who doesn’t present an official purchased copy of the music to the adjudicator. The joke of it is, nearly every piece is an old, uncopyrighted work by Mozart, Bach or whomever, which has at most been lightly edited for the children’s edition, sometimes with only a couple of articulation marks and a cartoon added.
Overall I am a big fan of what is mostly a private, unsubsidized arts activity. The private instructors are largely untaxed due to the highly distributed, small-scale nature of the instruction. There is no tax writeoff for the private lessons and the recitals are usually performed at no expense in borrowed church halls. It is arts and culture happening spontaneously and freely.
At a certain level however the government gets its fat, sticky paws all over the children’s arts scene. Especially in the downtown areas of big cities which are full of politicians, government employees, bankers and government contractors, you find large “academy” type arts schools for the children of the elite. These are subsidized to the hilt and the halls of these academies are sometimes covered with life-sized portrait photos of the politicians who showered them with stolen public money. It happens for dance, music, painting, and probably every kind of activity that the nibs assume is the right of their children to partake.
That is the camel walk. The backslide gave rise to the the Moon walk. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxZcLWAmdco&feature=related
