Song Teaching Free Trade and Division of Labor

March 27, 2010 by

Long a fan of They Might Be Giants, I decided to buy some of their children’s albums. They are great! One of my favorite tracks from their album No! (buy, listen) is “Where Do They Make Balloons?

This song’s lyrics celebrate the international division of labor and trade, kid-style. Selected lyrics:

Marmalade’s from Scotland, Rugs from Pakistan
Mexico has jumping beans and cars are from Japan
Clowns are from the circus, barking comes from dogs
Eggs come from a chicken and log cabins come from logs

Spaghetti is from China but Italians make it best
Ants can make an anthill and monkeys make a mess
Hungary isn’t hungry
And French fries aren’t from France
Turkeys aren’t from Turkey – they can’t fly but they can dance

But where…?
Where do they make balloons?

“and cars are from Japan.”

Hehehe, I’m guessing there are some UAW members who took the CD and threw it out the window when they heard that lyric.
