“authoritarian capitalism”?

Isn’t that a contradiction in terms?

buba March 12, 2010 at 12:44 pm

@Fephisto
I think that Authoritarian capitalism is something like Chile during Pinochet’s dictatorship. That means that you have an authoritarian government, but free market economy.
This is how I understand it

J Cortez March 12, 2010 at 2:33 pm

Another example of authoritarian capitalism would be China. Even though they’re in a huge bubble at the moment, they’ve gone from destitute famine to relative prosperity in just twenty years.

I dislike this choice of topic. It’s purely utilitarian has makes no mention of the ethics involved. I guarantee you, if the winners make the case for authoritarianism, technocratic governmental ideologues will rejoice and cite those papers to justify all sorts of market interventions.

Those authoritarian states that have provided economic growth and development have done so because they have adopted policies that encourage capital formation. This is the key. In any event, the (classical) liberal political framework is eminently suited to foster capital accumulation, and echoing Mr. Cortez, does so much more ethically.

Ah, o.k., I see what they mean now.

…..

I would like to see Hoppe write an essay for this.

J.K. Baltzersen March 14, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Hoppe is too old for this contest.

Unfortunately, so am I.

J Cortez,

I see what you’re saying, but one could still answer the question with reference to ethics.

The great medieval philosopher and theologian Nicole d’Oresme was the inspiration of Copernicus on this matter.”

Who said gold should be trading at $20 per ounce or $35 per ounce for so long? Then again what if someone who buys gold at $1000 today finds gold trading at $700 or so in ten years time? Will they say gold is a great investment?

As far as I know authoritarian capitalism is a government system that combines a capitalist economic system with some form of authoritarian or despotic political regime. Examples of this kind of government are most commonly found these days in East Asia: for example, China, Vietnam and Laos and, in the past, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. How it can be the viable alternative to Western liberal version? Seems like to absolutely different ideologies.
