The problem with trying to understand the arguments put forward by Ms. Floystrup is that she won't forthrightly state the true cause of her opposition to Safeway's expansion. She sits on the board of an neighborhood organization (RCPC) which has waged a 20 year war trying to keep others away from the neighborhood in the belief that their property values could be adversely affected by development. The Rockridge commercial district is dominated by a community transit facility (BART station). The RCPC has spent much energy on keeping others away from the BART station by opposing additional parking and development of affordable housing such as condos and apartments. However, if these folks revealed their drawbridge mentality they would be held up to ridicule by less fortunate residents of Oakland and those who would like to park at the BART station so that they may get to work in a timely manner.

Fortunately, Ms. Floydstrup has found her absurd economic theories skewered by the great Ludwig von Mises. Maybe Rockridge residents could contemplate this lesson the next time they drive past all of the little shops and vacant storefronts in Rockridge to go to Costco.
