Greedy-Bastard Economics

October 6, 2009 by

If your landlord or apartment manager hasn’t gotten around to fixing your garbage disposal for weeks, how carefully do you think about why? If you are like many people, you simply blame your landlord or manager. FULL ARTICLE

WRONG “unseen.” The essay describes the symptoms, not the cause. The cause of greed is our sin nature, the one observable truth of Christianity. Call it “defective DNA” if one prefers. There is absolutely no evidence that the human race has become more moral in the last 10,000 years, only more sanitary and more efficient in doing evil.

The bottom line error of Libertarianism and every other political/economic system is that the gurus say, “If only (some human institution) would change in this direction the economic/social situation would get improve.” This attitude, actually Social Darwinism, is why the situation will never improve.

If our elected and appointed leaders would admit that they are all greedy liars, that each and everyone of us is a greedy liar. The only difference is that some are worse (better?) than others.

As the Dutch variety of Reformed Christian theology puts it, all human activity including the the Church on Earth is effected by our sin nature. If our leaders would design a political/economic system for a people who know and admit that they greedy liars then there is at least a possibility of improving the system.

Several people who write and are quoted on this list and in other places are Christian Reconstructionists (see wiki and/or google). Their theology is that only “real” Christians (people who agree with themselves) are led by the Holy Spirit. The Millennium will come when they have imposed the Old Testament Law on the rest of us. Their error is in failing to admit that they are also greedy liars. Heaven-bound greedy liars but greedy liars, never the less.

Yes, this is a tautology, but so is every human logical system as Kurt Godel demonstrated last century.

Libertarianism is just about the only philosophy that DOES recognize that humans are self-interested animals who will do what is expedient. This is precisely why they advocate against vast concentrations of power: because one of these humans gets to hold the levers of that power.

“If only (some human institution) would change in this direction the economic/social situation would get improve.”

Anarcho-capitalism is about abolishing all institutions…

Greed in a free society is what drives prosperity. If we do our best to protect natural law, we will have a society that is “freer” of Social Darwinism and poverty. If there is no greed to get ahead, there is no competition. If there is no competition, there is no discovery process for more efficient means. If there is no discovery process for more efficient means, there is no progress. Where there is no progress, there is only decay.

Admitting that we are all sinners and liars will not make the problem go away.

Giant_Joe, I agree with your sentiment, but I wouldn’t call it greed. I would stick with Adam Smith’s “self-interest” or Mises’s desire to improve one’s condition. Greed is a Biblical term for an inordinate desire for wealth, but even the Bible is vague on when desire for improving one’s condition turns into greed. In fact, the Bible encourages people to work hard and save, both of which increase wealth but aren’t greed. I tend to equate greed with immoral activity. If you are not stealing or defrauding someone, then you’re not being greedy.

Adam Smith knew that many people would let greed get the best of them, but he knew that a free market would limit the damage that greedy people can do.

There is so much information on the net about greedy landlords, a guy called athair_siochain is everywhere calling the landlords parasites. he seems to have a lot of information, he says most of our politicians are landlords or moneylenders, I tried to prove him wrong, could not find one politician who did not collect rent, this says landlords have the power of government to ensure rents always go up… the law that is said to protect the tenant , was put in place by landlords,
Tens of Trillions of Euro,s were invented through the rise in property values over the past ten years , no one ever questions this abnormal way of making the rich richer,
