Driving into work today, I saw garbage bins overflowing and city dumpsters spilling out with trash. It stinks. It’s disgusting. It’s uncivilized. It’s probably dangerous to some extent.
It’s a holiday, so of course the government workers charged with picking up this nasty refuse can’t work, even though construction workers in private firms are busy bees taking advantage of the extra time.
It’s true with house trash too: pickup is once per week — on schedule — and there is nothing you can do to make it more frequent. It’s part of the master plan, don’t you know, and if you make more trash than the once-per-week pickup can contain, that is your problem, not the city’s.
The very fear that people have about private trash collection — that it will pile up and no one will do anything about it — turns out to be a regular feature of government trash collection. But we look the other way. Why? FULL ARTICLE

Everyone in town had to haul their own trash to the landfill a couple of miles outside of town.
Never watched the show. I know it’s fictional, but still, one wonders why everyone was hauling their own trash–nobody wanted to pay someone else to pick it up and take it for them? A private dumpster could have collected the trash, with periodic trips to the landfill.
My municipality takes my trash twice a week.
On Thursday they take our recyclables.
There is no set number of cans but if you want extra recycling cans you need to buy them from the government. You can use regular cans for recycling but you’ll have to label it yourself.
In the summer and fall they take the lawn clippings and if you’re resourceful you’re greens from the kitchen. Once the greens are composted we are able to take as much compost as we want for “free”.
I see nothing wrong with this arrangement.
If your local government is incapable of providing basic services then vote them out or look towards the “market” to fix your problems. I’d personally move towards voting them out since I believe most basic services belong in the realm of the government. If the government is not able to effectively work then that is a reflection on the population that votes them in not on the inefficiency of all governments.
I would be in favor of the New Zealand system though if it is indeed safe and not simply dumping the trash elsewhere. I’m very interested in Plasma Arcs and their use in trash removal.
“If the government is not able to effectively work then that is a reflection on the population that votes them in not on the inefficiency of all governments.”
This contention assumes that the coercive monopolistic system is not the problem and that if only we had the “right people” administering it, then the coercive monopoly would work.
Coercive monopolies (I know, I repeat myself) do not work. It doesn’t matter who runs them. How many examples from history does it take for this simple fact to sink in?
As far as “voting them out” is concerned, this assumes the initial and ongoing consent of the “voter” to have this responsibility unilaterally taken away.
I do not consent to having my responsibilities and rights unilaterally taken away, so I will not vote for anyone. Why is it that people want to be ruled?
NO RULERS!!!!
My town picks up trash twice a week residential, 3 times a week commercial. We have trucks that are in good working condition, powered by CNG, all the cities road vehicles are CNG. Trash is transported to an area several miles away where it is pile onto a hill, and when the hill gets to a certain height they cover it with dirt from a pit, the pit becomes a new dump, and the hill is allowed to decompose and grow over with grass. It’s a pretty good system. Hazardous wastes are sent to a hazmat facility, everyone pays from recycling whether you recycle, or not, and you can put recycled materials unsorted in blue bags which are picked up by recycling trucks later to be sent to a sorting facility.
yeah,The Government/Private trash experiment has been tried here in New Zealand,.
MX touched on an interesting point. In a situation where the trash pickup is private and is up to the individual to arrange for collection of their own trash, what can be done to make sure that everyone, indeed, arranges to have their trash picked up???
