Facebook Bomb

August 29, 2009 by

As you have surely noticed, the Ludwig von Mises Institute’s facebook page has undergone major renovations. Our fans now have a fantastic place to visit daily to keep updated on the latest news, events, photos, and publications. Fans can also take advantage of the “discussions” tab to engage in stimulating conversations with one another on all things Austrian.

Sadly, due to the page’s previous state of disrepair, we only have around 8,000 fans. We are determined to change this (20,000 is surely possible) and we need your help. We want everyone who is currently a fan to recruit their friends, coworkers, family, neighbors, people walking on the sidewalk, everyone.

We need our fans to persuade others to become official fans. By doing this you are helping to spread the word about free markets and free individuals. There are millions of disgruntled citizens out there who are fed up. More and more people are becoming disillusioned with Obama. The time is right to introduce people to the Austrian principles. It should be easy to convince them to become an official fan of our new and improved fan page.

Also, in an effort to improve the content and encourage everyone to utilize this fantastic resource, we are having a contest. We will be closely following the topics under the discussions tab. Every week we will choose the best discussion topic and post it, and the fans’ contributions, on the official mises.org blog. In addition, we will select one dedicated fan as a “Top Contributor.” Each month in 2009 we will select a Contributor of the Month from the weekly winners; this dedicated Austrian will receive a free book published by the Ludwig von Mises Institute.

This facebook bomb, and personal and economic freedom, cannot succeed without your help. Get started now, message everyone you know, put the link on your status and send out emails. If you have a blog or website, use the html code provided on our facebook page to add a widget like the one below, this enables your readers to become a fan in a single click without ever leaving your site. Help us reach our goal of 20,000 fans by the end of 2009!

You really need to add links to your social networking groups/pages to the front page of Mises.org if you want to increase participation in them, or better yet add the links somewhere at the top or bottom sections of your template so that the links appear on every page. I’ve been all over mises.org and I can’t remember ever seeing a single link anywhere on the site to the Facebook page or the LinkedIn group.

Also, be sure to get your username for your facebook page. Your page should qualify as you have over 100 fans and it has been in existence for more than 30 days.

I invite others to drop Facebook and seek out other means of social networking that use software that is available for the end users to use, study, modify and distribute/share with their neighbors. Personally, I only use and support Freedom respecting software and operating systems (e.g., gNewSense GNU/Linux and GNU Public Licensed software) that don’t spy on their end users with or without their knowledge and permission (i.e., Coercive and Restrictive – End User License Agreements) for a profit (i.e., gathering tracking and marketing information termed “the honey pot”).

Feel free to add posts to identica – the free (freedom respecting) software community’s version of “twitter” and by all means drop Facebook and Twitter and instead seek out freedom respecting alternatives to these “walled social communities.”

[i]Coercive and Restrictive – End User License Agreements[/]

please clarify, how is an agreement coercive? If it’s coercive, it’s not an agreement. And if it’s an agreement, it’s not coercive.
