Nock’s Anarchist Progress

November 6, 2006 by

Here is a special treat to lift your spirits before the dreadfully routine election tomorrow: Albert Jay Nocks’s “Anarchist Progress” (in HTML). To my mind, it has to be one of the great attacks on the state ever written. It is subtle but devastating. It was first published in American Mercury in 1928, and then appeared in On Doing the Right Thing, a book from the same year that is now available on Mises.org.

I seriously wonder if Albert Jay Nock was the real-life inspiration for the character Weeks in Maugham’s Of Human Bondage. Nock had the same kind of mind.
